Pupusa

The State organs of El Salvador have repeatedly expressed that pupusas are part of the country’s culture. Therefore, on April 1, 2005, by Legislative Decree No. 655, the “National Pupusa Day” was officially declared:

“Pupusas are the national dish of El Salvador,” due to their indigenous origin and popular acceptance. With the purpose of celebrating the belonging of this culinary invention to the culture of the Salvadoran people, it is declared the second Sunday of November each year as the “National Pupusa Day.”

The Ministry of Culture of El Salvador carries out events throughout the country with the aim of promoting the consumption, production, and exportation of the so-called national dish.

Activities range from competitions where the winner is the one who eats the most pupusas, exhibitions of studies related to the pupusa, business forums to propose policies regarding it, and initiatives to break records in the size and weight of a pupusa.

The champion of the “pupusa eaters” contest is Genaro Martínez, who ate 51 pupusas without interruption in 1996.
